DemocracyNow: attivismo, povertà e cambiamento oggi in USA

Onde non perderci ulteriormente nella solita cyber-autoreferenzialità e rilanciare invece conversazioni su contenuti reali, nulla di meglio che tenere d’occhio (per la scena USA in particolare) fonti quali DemocracyNow!, ottimo esempio anche per l’integrazione fra giornalismo tradizionale, new media e citizen journalism. Oltre a monitorare da vicino le mosse del neo-eletto Obama – non sia mai che sulle ali dell’entusiamo ci si dimentichi di far pressione perché mantenga le molte promesse pre-elettorali – nei giorni scorsi il programma ha fra l’altro intervistato Bill Ayers e Bernardine Dohrn, già membri di spicco dei Weather Underground e del movimento anti-guerra di quasi 40 anni or sono – nomi e questioni che hanno fatto capolino proprio nella campagna Obama.

Spunto questo per proporre importanti riflessioni sul percorso non solo personale della coppia (militanti prima e poi appassionati educatori e genitori) ma di un’intera generazione ancora oggi in prima fila per le battaglie civili. Spiega Bernardine: “I think without the 60’s, we wouldn’t be where we are now, and yet, I think, Bill and I feel very much like our job is to live in the present and to be part of today’s social struggles.” Aggiunge Bill: “I think that if we’ve learned one thing from those perilous years, it’s that dogma, certainty, self-righteousness, sectarianism of all kinds is dangerous and self-defeating. So, to me, the rhythm that we tried to live our lives by and that we urge on our students and others is open your eyes, see the world as it really is. Act. Take some action within the world.”

Sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda, ieri un’intervista con Stephen Pimpare, autore di “A People’s History of Poverty in America” (New Press). Tema di cui si parla assai poco nel Paese più ricco del mondo. Eppure: “The rising unemployment could push between 7 and 10 million Americans into poverty according to a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities released. Census Bureau figures from 2007 show that 12.5 % of the population, or over 37 million people, live below the poverty line. That number could increase to up to 47 million says the Center’s report.” Anche qui il punto è sfatare i luoghi comuni promuovendo l’azione concreta, forti dell’esperienza passata e della consapevolezza odierna: “The notion that there is either something inherent in individuals that leads them to be poor selling them to be poor, some sort of moral emotional, intellectual failing, or some sort of collective culture that is born and bred in poor communities, in which we pass poverty around, almost as if it is some sort of disease. … It is not productive for us to look backwards to how we got here, we’ve got to look forward and understand how to solve the problem.”
